The Urban Water Body Diagnostic Tool is intended to serve as a decision support system for managing the water bodies within cities. This tool helps in identifying and prioritizing actions for rejuvenation of water bodies. Using this tool, cities can conduct a holistic rapid assessment of all their water bodies periodically, in order to identify immediate actions for their management.

This is based on assessing the status-quo of urban water bodies, in terms of four dimensions - physical, chemical, biological and management. The tool uses ten indicators for evaluation, which are meant to quantify the dimensions using numerical values. The UWD value calculated using these indicators paints a picture of the overall status of each water body.
The UWD value for each water body is measured on a scale of 0 to 5. Higher values indicate a better condition of the water body. Further details regarding interpretation of the UWD value are shared below.
